Beginning in the Middle Ages, the\u00a0<em>Kn\u00f6del<\/em> was a permanent feature of rural cuisine.<\/p>\n<p>The dish\u2019s exact origin is unclear; what is certain, though, is that the specialty has become <strong>incredibly varied and diverse.<\/strong> Some are archetypal, familiar throughout the world, while others are regional specialties; all types of <em>Kn\u00f6del<\/em>, though, are as greatly varied as pasta or pizza.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>earliest visual depiction<\/strong> of the <em>Kn\u00f6del<\/em> can be seen at the chapel of Hocheppan Castle, and dates from the <strong>13th century:<\/strong> A fresco shows a kneeling woman who has prepared the <em>Kn\u00f6del<\/em> for the Mother of God, the Virgin Mary.
